San Fele, Italy | Reunion 2003

2003 invite

On May 10, 2003, the San Fele Association of Western New York held what turned out to be a REUNION that would never be forgotten. A beautiful Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church celebrated by Fr. Secondo Casarotto, CS and con-celebrated by Fathers Joseph and Albert George, siblings of San Fele ancestry who were visiting family in Buffalo from California. The Sanfelese attendees were also honored by the presence of the Hon. Aldo Michele Radice, President Del Consiglio Regione Basilicata and former Mayor of San Fele. Also present from San Fele, Italy were the Hon. Pasquale Di Leo, vice Mayor of San Fele, Michele Tarangiolo, a San Fele Official, Professor Vincenzo Genovese and Antonio Caggiano. Arrangements for this visit were concluded shortly before the May 10 th . The honored guests presence was a complete and wonderful surprise for the Buffalo Sanfeleses. The reception and luncheon for the almost 400 guest was held at the Buffalo Convention Center. A wonderful all Italian buffet was specially prepared and delighted the palates of everyone present. While the guest dined, a strolling mandolin trio sang Italian songs from table to table. The video, San Fele, Da “Castrum” A “Borgo Albergo” with English translation was shown. After the feast, song and camaraderie, the program began with the Hon. Anthony Masiello, Mayor of Buffalo, presenting the Hon. President A. Michele Radice gifts from the citizens of Buffalo. Presidente Radice reciprocated by presenting a beautiful photograph of San Fele for the Mayor’s Office. Other recognized special guests were County Comptroller Nancy Naples and Police Commissioner Rocco Mecca Diina. Mayor Masiello gave a short talk on the struggles that his parents and grandparents endured after coming to Buffalo and mentioned that the Sisti and Carnevale families were also his relatives. President Radice, with Italian Vice Consul Lucy Caracci Cullens translating, gave a beautiful talk embracing the relationship between our two countries and asking that we extend it with visits to the Basilicata region along with San Fele. The region has become a tourist location and that has helped the economy of the area. He announced to the gathering that they should be proud of their ancestors who came to America for a better life but they should also be proud of those San Felese’s who left their country to assist others in the lesser-developed world. He said that Sanfelese’s around the world would be proud to know that a San Fele native, San Giustino De Jacobis was canonized on October 26, 1975 for his missionary apostolate efforts in Eritrea and North Ethiopia during the early 19 th Century. President Radice ended his visit with a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada visiting with a group of San Fele natives who migrated to that city in the 1960’s.
